In the Fall of 2006, I had the pleasure of spending a total of 13 hours interviewing a prominent Polish film director, Krzysztof Zanussi. Together with Andrzej Wajda, Mr. Zanussi has the status of a "national filmmaker": when referring to one of them, all the younger generations speak no otherwise than "the Master".
Mr. Zanussi has made over 70 films in at least 5 languages, winning awards at festivals such as Cannes and Venice. Tributes to his work have been held around the world, one of the more recent ones was at the Telluride Film Festival in 2003. While he is renowned in Europe as a spokesman on political and social issues, such as the unification of Europe, the book I have created from the interviews comprises the first attempt to present Mr. Zanussi primarily as an artist and filmmaker. |
