Untouchables, or dalits, are the lowest caste in Indian society. Untouchability is considered illegal by the government but is still a fact in rural areas. Poverty and lack of education are its practical dimensions. High in the hills of Tamil Nadu, there are few jobs for the dalits and most of them illegal. |

Soumya's father left her mother because she gave birth to 2 girls and no sons. The mother works at stone quarries carrying heavy rocks on her head. The grandparents help, and the grandpa also works in quarries and at constructions sites, but two seasonal incomes of up to 50 rupees a day ($1.25) barely suffice to feed the family of five one bowl of rice a day. |
